Mount Psiloritis (Ψηλορείτης), also known as Mount Ida (Ίδη), rises above the hills of central Crete as its highest peak, reaching 2,456 metres. Snow lingers on its upper slopes well into spring, standing in contrast to the Mediterranean landscape below. At its feet, the foothills descend into a wide, undulating expanse of olive groves and low hills, part of the fertile Mylopotamos region (Μυλοπόταμος).
Taken from the viewpoint at Melidoni Cave (Σπήλαιο Μελιδονίου), this view captures the meeting point between the island’s rugged mountain interior and its cultivated lowlands — a landscape shaped equally by geology and centuries of olive cultivation. Revered since antiquity, Psiloritis also holds a central place in Greek mythology as one of the mountains traditionally linked to the upbringing of Zeus.
