The Korail Class 210000, purpose-built for the ITX-Saemaeul service, is a high-speed-capable electric multiple unit (EMU) manufactured by Hyundai Rotem and introduced in 2014. Designed for comfortable regional intercity travel, it operates at a maximum service speed of 165 km/h, with acceleration and ride quality optimized for Korea’s main conventional lines.
Replacing the older Saemaeul-ho coaches hauled by locomotives like the Class 8200, the 210000 series provides faster, smoother, and more energy-efficient service. Each 6-car set (configured with distributed traction) features air suspension, full passenger HVAC, onboard Wi-Fi, and ergonomically arranged seating with 2+2 configuration. Cars include restrooms, luggage racks, and designated accessibility spaces, following Korail’s universal design standards.
Powered by asynchronous AC traction motors with regenerative braking, the 210000 is equipped with onboard ATP safety systems and automatic couplers for flexible formation. Its core routes include the Gyeongbu, Honam, Jeolla, Donghae, and Jungang lines, serving major cities like Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, Busan, Gwangju, and Pohang. With an increasing number of sets built to meet demand, the ITX-Saemaeul trains symbolize the modernization of Korea’s non-HSR rail corridors.
