Progne chalybea

The Gray-breasted Martin entered the ornithological record through a specimen from Cayenne, described by Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760 and formally named Hirundo chalybea by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789. The species was later placed in Progne, a genus introduced by Friedrich Boie in 1826. Its specific epithet means "steely" in Latin, and the upperparts are a glossy steel blue.

It is the most widely distributed martin of the Neotropics, breeding from northern Mexico through Central America and across South America south to central Argentina. Southern populations, referred to the subspecies macrorhamphus, are slightly larger and shift northward during the austral winter. In Uruguay the species is recorded from late winter through summer in many departments, from the Atlantic coast of Rocha, including Santa Teresa National Park, to the shores of the Río de la Plata and the Uruguay River.

A bird of semi-open country, it settles readily in towns and villages, frequently near water. Nests are placed in cavities in banks and buildings, in old woodpecker holes and in crevices beneath eaves. Its diet is entirely insectivorous, with prey taken on the wing.

Adults measure 16–18 cm. The upperparts are steel blue, the throat and breast dusky gray, and the belly white, with the white most extensive in the southern subspecies. The sexes are similar, and the species is the least dimorphic of its genus. The IUCN classifies it as Least Concern.

Personal note: This individual was one of several martins I watched from the afternoon until dusk, flitting about and settling repeatedly on light poles and posts. The photograph was taken in low light, as the evening advanced.
