A slender, pale buff-pink dove, easily recognized in adults by the narrow black half-collar on the nape — absent or faint in juveniles, as seen here. One of Europe’s great avian success stories, it expanded its range from the Balkans across the entire continent during the 20th century and is now a familiar presence in towns, gardens, and farmland. Its soft, repetitive three-note coo is one of the most recognizable suburban bird calls. Pairs remain loosely associated year-round and may raise several broods per season.
