Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village is located in the Jung-gu district of Incheon, a major port city on the western coast of South Korea, near Incheon Chinatown and the historic city center. The area was originally a residential neighborhood that experienced gradual decline as its population aged and younger residents moved elsewhere.
As part of an urban regeneration initiative launched in the early 2010s, Songwol-dong was transformed into a themed cultural district designed to attract visitors and revitalize the local environment. The project repurposed the existing streetscape through the installation of large-scale murals and three-dimensional sculptures inspired by classic fairy tales and children’s literature, combining Western stories with traditional Korean narratives.
The village functions as an open-air exhibition, where houses, walls, stairways, poles, and rooftops are integrated into a continuous visual setting. Rather than being confined to a single site, the artworks are distributed throughout the neighborhood, forming loosely defined thematic zones that reference well-known stories such as Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, The Wizard of Oz, and Korean folk tales. Many of the installations are three-dimensional, allowing visitors to physically interact with the figures and use the space as a photographic environment.
The area is freely accessible and can be explored on foot. In addition to the murals and sculptures, the surrounding neighborhood includes small cafés, themed shops, and nearby cultural attractions, including optical illusion museums in the adjacent districts, which complement the fairy tale concept of the village.
Although developed as a tourist destination, Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village remains a living residential area. Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of local residents and to treat the neighborhood as a shared public space. The village is primarily appreciated as a daytime destination, when its vivid colors, illustrative details, and sculptural elements are most clearly visible.
