The Maguari Stork (Ciconia maguari) is the sole species of the genus Ciconia inhabiting the Americas. Its distribution is centered in South America, where it occupies a variety of wetland habitats, including swamps, marshes, wetlands, and seasonally flooded grasslands across countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and parts of Venezuela and Peru. It is a large stork with predominantly white plumage, sharply contrasting with its black flight feathers and tail. It is characterized by a straight, robust bill and a white-feathered neck; the bare skin around the eyes and its long legs are typically reddish, with the facial patch becoming especially prominent during the breeding season. Unlike its Old World relatives, C. maguari is mostly sedentary, performing local, short-distance movements and dispersal primarily in response to fluctuations in water levels and food availability.
