During my visit to Wolmido in Incheon, I had the chance to watch the Sejong 5-ho (세종 5호) make its way across the bay, a ferry that forms part of the everyday traffic between the city and the islands scattered across the Yellow Sea. It’s a Ro–Pax vessel, launched in 2004, built to carry both people and vehicles—up to 290 passengers and 47 cars—with a compact but sturdy profile measuring just over 49 meters long and 14 meters wide, weighing in at 409 gross tons. Operated by Sejong Shipping (세종해운), it serves the short routes to Shindo and Jangbongdo, moving at a steady 13.5 knots as it crosses the calm channels around Incheon.
Seeing it slip past the waterfront gave me a sense of how essential these ferries are to the rhythm of local life, connecting the mainland with the islands in a way that feels both routine and quietly significant.
