Mud bathing is a vital act for the survival of elephants in their natural habitat. By covering themselves with a thick layer of mud, they create a natural sunscreen that protects their sensitive skin from the sun’s rays. In addition, this same layer serves as an effective barrier against insects, and as the water in the mud evaporates, it helps to regulate their body temperature, keeping them cool in the heat.
