The Shinkansen N700 series, introduced in 2007, is a high-speed train jointly developed by JR Central and JR West. It operates on the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo-Osaka), Sanyo Shinkansen (Osaka-Hakata), and Kyushu Shinkansen (Fukuoka-Kagoshima). While JR Central and JR West deploy these trains on the Tokaido and Sanyō lines, JR Kyushu uses the standard N700 series exclusively on the Kyushu route.
The N700A series, where the “A” stands for Advanced, is an upgraded version of the original N700. Introduced in 2013, it is operated solely by JR Central and JR West and serves the Tokaido and Sanyō lines. This model refines the 16-car configurations of its predecessor, incorporating enhancements such as improved vibration control, more efficient braking systems, and optimized passenger comfort. The N700A achieves a maximum speed of 300 km/h, operating at 285 km/h on the congested Tokaido route. Its tilting technology ensures stability on curves, while aerodynamic design and regenerative braking boost energy efficiency. Modern amenities include Wi-Fi, power outlets, and ergonomic seating, alongside advanced safety systems like earthquake detection and automatic emergency braking.
JR Kyushu’s fleet consists of standard N700 series trains, not the N700A variant.
Formations such as the F22 are part of JR West’s dedicated “F” sets.
